A GIANT of a Panto at the Byre Theatre

Jack and the Beanstalk – a GIANT of a pantomime at the Byre Theatre!

From now until 3rd January 2015, the Byre Theatre’s main stage will be transformed into the magical kingdom of Fantasia for its Jack and the Beanstalk pantomime. Along with music, singing, dancing and laughs aplenty, this fun-filled panto is especially important as the first professional production to take place at the theatre since it officially reopened in October 2014.

Written and directed by Gordon Barr, this unique reworking of the classic pantomime tale has a distinctive St Andrews flavour to the plot. Gordon is Artistic Director of ‘Bard in the Botanics’ in Glasgow and the same creative mind responsible for the Byre’s hugely successful Snow White pantomime in 2012, so audiences – young and old alike – can expect a real theatrical treat.

The main storyline focuses on the antics of the Numpty family: Dame Nellie Numpty is in danger of losing her cowshed (her beloved byre!) and her son, Jack, is too busy dreaming about Christmas presents to be of much use. Will they be thrown out into the snow at Christmas or will Jack be able to save the day with the help of the audience, his friends and some magic beans?

The Byre recently opened its doors once again thanks to a management agreement between the University of St Andrews, Fife Council, and Creative Scotland. Jack and the Beanstalk celebrates the end of an eventful few months at the theatre and marks the beginning of an exciting new programme of performances and community events for 2015 and beyond.
