Car Parking

There is plentiful car parking in St Andrews, and most of it is free of charge! If you are staying overnight, your accommodation provider should be able to recommend the most convenient spots; if you’re on a day visit, here are the main parking options in town:

  1. On-street parking in the centre of St AndrewsIn the very centre of town, some parking is metered and coins are required to pay (the machines do not offer change or extra credit for overpayment). Check the individual meters for prices and time limits – usually a two hour maximum. On-street parking in the metered areas is free of charge from 5pm until 9am every day and also on Sunday mornings. Slightly further out from the centre, there is no charge for on-street parking.
  2. Pay & Display car parks: There are a few off-street paying car parks around St Andrews, ideal for stays of longer than two hours. These are cheaper than the on-street metered parking in town. Closest to the centre are the car parks at St Mary’s Place and Argyle Street, but there is also a large paid car park (free of charge in winter) on Bruce Embankment, next to the British Golf Museum. Like the on-street parking, these car parks require coins in payment, and do not give change.
  3. Free parking: The largest free car parks can be found just off the Petheram Bridge roundabout, by the university buildings (on the A91 into St Andrews from the West). Cars can be parked here for the whole day without charge and it takes less than 10  minutes to walk to the town centre. A good tip is to turn north at the Petheram Bridge roundabout (towards the Old Course Hotel), where a “hidden” 60-space free car park is located – again, just 10 minutes’ walk form the town centre.
  4. At the beaches: 15 minutes’ walk from the town centre, there are many free parking spaces at both East Sands and West Sands. At the latter, a voluntary car parking donation to the Brighter St Andrews charitable fund can be made in the collection box located here.
