Many of you are possibly wondering what all the fuss is over the Dunhill Links Championship? Happily, Graylyn Loomis, is here to tell us all about it!
Graylyn is a student at the University of St Andrews who also writes a fantastic golf based blog.
The Dunhill Links Championship brings some of the world’s most famous celebrities and professional golf’s biggest stars to St Andrews. The first week in October marks the influx of famous blood into the town. The event started in 1985 and has occurred every year since.
The tournament consists of pairing a professional golfer with an amateur. The duos then play a round at Kingsbarns, Carnoustie, and the St Andrews Old Course. After those three rounds, there is a cut, and remaining golfers proceed to a final round on the Old Course.
The coveted Dunhill Cup
Pros including Padraig Harrigton, Lee Westwood, and Dustin Johnson among many others are paired with celebrities including the likes of Bill Murray, Michael Phelps, and Sir Steve Redgrave.
What makes the Dunhill Links so unique is the very personal and intimate feeling of the tournament. Nearly all of the tournament participants stay in the town of St Andrews. Just walking around the town of booking dinner in a restaurant warrants a very good chance of running into a star. Entry to the courses is always extremely inexpensive, and the crowds are small enough to get very close to your favourite golfers.
Michael Phelps at 2012 Dunhill Cup
In 2011, Michael Hoey from Northern Ireland showed golfing prowess by holding off had Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlory in the final round to win. US Open champion McIlroy eventually finished runner-up after a seven-under-par 65. 2010 US Open champion McDowell’s 69 gave him a share of third place, two off the lead.
Another feature of the Dunhill that rarely goes unnoticed by the town locals is Saturday night’s firework display. After the tournament’s gala dinner, an incredible fireworks show always takes place over the golf courses. If you’re in town, make the short trip down to the 18th fairway of the Old Course for the unforgettable show.
A determined field will all be seeking the trophy and every golfer’s dream, victory on the Old Course.
